Song of the Week: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah Mclachlan
One of the best things about my job as a professional wedding photographer is that I get to witness love at its most simplest form. Leave aside the decorations, the food, the stress inducing relatives, and crazy drunk friends, and you’re left with two people whose love is so powerful that it has the potential to change their lives forever.
Real love, however, is not without its issues and can never be perfect. It’s not only about the good times, but more importantly, it’s about the tough times and how two people can handle those situations together. It’s about dealing with personal flaws so that you can be a better person for your other half. It’s about finding a person who loves your strengths as a person and who also has the desire to help you improve your weaknesses.
With all that said, I’ve always been curious about the history of a couple and what they’ve gone through to help them solidify their bond. I was listening to some music on my phone the other day and Sarah Mclachlan’s Fumbling Towards Ecstasy came on. The song, I believe, is about a person dealing with the fear of opening herself to others and allowing herself to be vulnerable. It’s about a person who, for the first time, is able to find the strength within herself to overcome her own inhibitions so that she can love and be loved. It’s a beautifully written song, and it serves as a reminder to me that all of the couples that I shoot for all have some sort of history together where they had to overcome certain obstacles for their love to happen.
Conceptual Photography Inspiration
This was shot in natural light, and as a general rule in wedding photography, you almost always want to have your bride facing the light. I’ve been experimenting a little bit with textures in photoshop, and I thought I’d try my hand at overlaying some textures over this picture. First, I masked the bride from the image so that I can apply a different texture to the background, and then I applied a few textures on top of the whole image, and masked out parts that I didn’t want to show. All in all, I think it came out pretty good.
