Music to Life Song of the Week: Setting Forth by Eddie Vedder

Setting Forth is the first track found on Eddie Vedder’s solo album “Into the Wild,” which is also the original soundtrack to the movie of the same name. Though the album may be short, it is concise and incredibly powerful. This image is part 3 of my self portrait series and just in case you haven’t seen the other images, you can check them out here and here. My last self portrait picture, End of the Road, is all about my journey of finding a new career path. During the two year period while I was on the hunt for a teaching position, I was doing a bit of videography as a hobby. I loved it so much that I formed an after school program called Paikea Productions where we focused on creating fun and educational videos. I had to eventually shut down the program due to a lack of funds, but one thing that came out of it was I realized that whatever career I was going to do next, it needed to be creative based. I love exercising my creative mind, and it helped me be a really engaging teacher. My wife suggested to try out photography, and although I never really dabbled in it, I thought it might be cool to try it out. I had no idea that it would eventually lead to a great career.

How it was Shot

Be it no concern, point of no return
Go forward in reverse
This I will recall
Everytime I fall

I’m free
Setting forth in the universe
Oh I’m free
Setting forth in the universe

This is one of my Music to Life images that isn’t a direct interpretation of a song, but it is inspired by it.  This is a composite image, and I shot this at a pond near my in laws’ cabin up by Lake Arrowhead in a little town called Running Springs, California. I used an empty Jack Daniel’s bottle (yes, whisky is my preferred liquor) and I used a desk and chair that was in the cabin. I shot the bottle in the pond with a tripod, and my wife photographed me separately at the desk. In order to keep the lighting consistent and make my job easier putting everything together in photoshop, we shot all the different elements in the same vicinity.
